Mala Beads

Developing a daily meditation ritual could be one of the kindest things you do for yourself while you’re pregnant. Adding visualizations and affirmations to the ritual will only heighten the positive effects. Meditation with the use of a Mala has proven to keep you focused and consistent with the practice.

What is a mala?
A mala is a string of 108 beads, with a larger head bead/stone known as the “Gurus Bead”. Malas are used as a tool to help the mind focus on meditation, or count mantras/affirmations in sets of 108 repetitions, or simply worn as an intention based piece of jewelry.

Why use a mala?
Often times we are trying to manifest a particular outcome or intention related to our pregnancies and births. It is said that by repeating the “intention” as a mantra ( a repetition of words) over and over, that it can help to manifest our desires. By sitting in a still meditation position, and repeating your intention into each bead, then wearing your mala out into the world; it can help you to bring your intention alive!

How is a mala used?
The mala is traditionally held in the right hand and is hanging between the thumb and the ring finger. The second finger is used to rotate the mala one bead at a time toward oneself with each repetition of breath or mantra. The practice begins at head bead and continues around the loop until the head bead is reached again.

Meditation & Affirmation with your Mala Beads

Find a quiet comfortable place in your home or outside. Sit upon a pillow or chair with as little distraction as possible. Try to keep a tall strait spine. Focus upon your regular breathing. In the beginning, simply notice your inhales and exhales. Once you begin to feel yourself settling, you can choose to add an affirmation or mantra.

For example: On the inhale, silently affirm as your touch the head bead “I trust my body” and on the exhale, silently affirm “I trust my baby” as you move on to the next bead. Continue with the affirmation until you reach the head bead again. The choices for affirmations are endless. Feel free to be creative. You can change the affirmation day to day, per trimester, or to simply calm your nerves whenever needed. Just keep it positive and in the present tense.

Mantra

For women going through the tremendous changes of pregnancy and motherhood, mantra is a powerful tool for peace and joy. Just as yoga has proved beneficial for pregnant women, chanting mantras for a healthy pregnancy is recommended as well. “Om”, “So Ham” or “Shrim” are some of the mantras that are recommended. Chanting these mantras with a mala bead from the first trimester itself will help the expectant mother to deal with the stress and tension that often accompanies a pregnancy.
